How-to: Access Router.

Well, I see this question come by sometimes. People who don't know how to access their router's I will help you to the best of my ability. Why access your router? there are many reasons why. If you needed to open ports, modify existing router settings, account and password, rebooting the router, upgrading firmware, enabling security, etc. First, it depends on your Brand of router for the procedures of accessing the settings. I will list the examples below (Keep in mind these are for default settings... unless someone in your household has altered them, I will tell you how to bypass that.)

Linksys Router:

Now, open up your Internet Browser. In the Address Bar, input the following: 192.168.1.1
The series of numbers you see is the Linksys default IP address for the router. It should now prompt and ask you for a Username and Password. If none of this was altered, it should be a blank Username but the Password is admin. If everything went well, you should now be seeing the Router's Settings Interface where all the options and everything is. For Advanced users you can open up ports for games and certain programs to make your Router allow those in. I'll explain those in a different post. Next.

Actiontec:

(Standard router given with the purchase of Verizon FIOS.)
Now, open up your Internet Browser. In the Address Bar, input the following: 192.168.0.1
The series of numbers you see is the Actiontec default IP address for the router. It should now prompt and ask you for a Username and Password. If none of this was altered, Username should be: admin and Password should be: password.

* Take note, the Actiontec routers do come enabled with a WEP key by default. You may need to input the WEP key to connect to the router. Default Actiontec WEP key is: 0fb3ca4d5d.

For other Brand Routers like Netgear, etc:

You may want to try a combination of methods between the two Brand of Routers that were just posted. Most common Router IP Addresses usually are: 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1. If you cannot access your router after trying these methods I have shown then I'm afraid you must contact the Router's Manufacturer. Which is usually a 1-800 number so don't be afraid to call them. Other then that, once you've accessed the Router Settings you can do a lot of things in there which I will post more information on that later on.

For people who have forgotten their Username and/or Password:

Simply, locate the reset button behind the router, which is a small little round button just in the back. Press and hold that down for 60 seconds. That should do a hard reset and apply the Default settings.

How-to Reboot your Network:
This is simple and easy, to let you all know the reason to rebooting your network is if you have just recently connected a new device to the network; Whether it be another PC, Video Gaming System, etc.

Simply, locate your Router. There should be a black power cable in the back of it, this is what you want to un-plug from the router and count atleast 30 seconds. After 30 seconds plug the power cable back into the router and let the router refresh and re-sync all the devices in your network.

This also fixes a lot of Network Connectivity Issues people encounter.

That's it for Accessing your Router Settings, I hope everyone has learned something and was helped by this. If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to ask me via e-mail: stevennewhall@yahoo.com

Take care.
